Education: Graduate of the University of Delaware
with majors in Theatre and Biology.
Ken Shelin has been a Sarasota
homeowner for the last 17 years, having lived on St.
Armands Key and Downtown. Ken has lived full-time in
Sarasota for 10 years after
having spent 34 years working in the field enforcement
organization of the United States
Food and Drug Administration after a very brief career
in musical theatre. During those
34 years he worked in Philadelphia, Detroit and Baltimore,
retiring as Director of FDA's
Baltimore District (Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia
and the District of Columbia). For
25 of those years he was a Federal manager and has
helped to write Federal drug
manufacturing regulations and FDA national strategic
policy documents. He has testified
before the United States Congress and several state
legislative committees on FDA
matters. He has received many awards during his Federal
service including two
Reinventing Government Awards and FDA's highest individual
achievement award, its
Award of Merit.
After retiring from the FDA, Ken began a second career
as a consultant to pharmaceutical
manufacturers, blood banks and plasma fractionation
firms in the US, Canada and
Europe. At the same time, he planned and spoke at conferences
for pharmaceutical
manufacturers sponsored by the University of Rhode
Island College of Pharmacy held in
the US and Europe. He also developed commercially available
training programs for drug
manufacturers.
After moving full-time to Sarasota, he became active
in civic affairs and served for two
years as President of St. Armands Residents Association.
After moving downtown he
served as President of the Bayfiont Condo Association,
the predecessor to the Downtown
Sarasota Condo Association. He was a member of the
City of Sarasota Planning Board
for five years and served as its chair in 2002.
Mr. Shelin has two daughters and a son as well as
six grandchildren living in Michigan
and Connecticut ranging in age from college student
to kindergartener.
